It’s going to be a long winter without
playing outside if you can’t wear a
coat is not something I would have
said even two years ago, but now
that my daughter is one and a half, I
find myself acting like a parent—well,
not acting like one. I am one. I’m a
dad. And I meant what I said. It’s
going to be a long winter without
playing outside if you can’t wear a
coat. If she could just understand
what I’m feeling. A small child
with frostbite? I want to prevent that
but she can’t. She can only feel that
a jacket is restricting and preventing
her ability to play at her best. I guess
I could try to empathize with the
desire to operate at your peak, but
my fatherly instincts won’t let me, so
she’s gonna have to wear a coat if
she wants to go outside. Either way,
it’s going to be a very, very long
winter.
