Long shadows stretch across the yard,
and the trees create stripes in the grass.
It’s like the bumblebee or a rugby match.
A pale golden hue in the middle of the
afternoon as we lean away. The northern
hemisphere is like a warrior in retreat.
We could not fight the sun, so we ran only
to find we are cold, and those long shadows
will not keep us warm. So, we will have
to start a fire or wear a jacket filled with
down. We need to drink a cup of hot tea. We
could see the benefit of a blanket made of
fleece. We may be in retreat, but that does
not mean we cannot go to our happy place,
like a socialist in Denmark, practicing hygge
while they prepare for a long, dark winter.
